Why Clearwater keeps winning 'Best Beach' lists

Three miles of impossibly white quartz sand, gently sloping into bath-warm Gulf of Mexico water that stays calm enough for toddlers and confident enough for snorkelers. Clearwater has been ranked the #1 beach in America by TripAdvisor multiple times β€” and unlike some winners, it earns the title.

The town itself is unpretentious and family-focused: a walkable beachfront promenade, the nightly Pier 60 sunset festival with buskers and craft vendors, and a string of casual seafood shacks that haven't changed much in 40 years.

Best time to visit

March through May is perfect β€” warm water, low humidity, and dry weather. Summer is hot, humid, and afternoon thunderstorms are routine, but the water is at its warmest. November through February is cooler but still pleasant β€” great for snowbirds.

What to do

Don't skip the Pier 60 Sunset Festival, nightly two hours before sunset. Take the ferry to Caladesi Island State Park, a roadless barrier island consistently ranked among the country's top beaches. Visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (the rescue home of Winter the dolphin from the movie 'Dolphin Tale').

For a day trip, drive 25 minutes to St. Petersburg for the DalΓ Museum and the city's growing craft beer and mural scene.

Where to stay

Beachfront resorts on South Gulfview Boulevard offer the best access β€” the Sandpearl and Opal Sands are the standouts. For value, look at Clearwater Beach's north end or just inland. Vacation rentals on Sand Key are quieter and family-friendly.

Local tips

Park at the Beach Walk garage and use the Jolley Trolley to get around β€” beach parking is scarce. Rent a beach cabana early in the day; they sell out by 10am in season. And book the Caladesi ferry online a day ahead in peak months.
